April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Well, at least it’s supposed to be. President Obama even signed an official proclamation that it is. However, news reporters have announced that it’s National Grilled Cheese Month. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good grilled cheese sandwich with a hot cup of coffee just like anyone else with working taste buds. However, I think it speaks volumes to why there are so many abused children. It’s much easier to eat a sandwich then talk about abuse.
Did you know that around 85% of abusers are a child’s family acquaintance, or a relative? Call me crazy, but I think that lesson on stranger danger just got cancelled out. Talk to your kids! You’ll teach them how to brush their teeth, pick up toys, and look for cars before they cross the street. They are like little sponges that will soak up whatever information you give them.
So here is my solution for April: Make a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches and share them with your kids while you let them know that they can trust you and tell you anything. They will get it.
